Probiotic, synbiotic, prebiotic: what each word means

A probiotic introduces live microorganisms. A prebiotic does not contain bacteria, but rather a substance that feeds them, most commonly inulin or another type of soluble fiber. A synbiotic is a formula that combines both in one package.

The distinction has practical importance when choosing. If your diet is poor in plant fibers, a prebiotic only has something to feed if the microflora is present. If you are coming off a course of antibiotics, the priority is different. Probiotics with live bacteria

Probiotic (4 Bulgarian strains, 2 billion per capsule, 90 capsules), Kids (8 strains, 5 billion per sachet, 10 sachets), BioPlus lozenges (20 tablets), Enteric Ecol (5 strains plus Saccharomyces boulardii, 12 capsules), Urobiotic Forte (4 strains, 30 sachets).

Synbiotics: live bacteria plus prebiotic

Opti6 in both pack sizes (9 strains, 20 billion per capsule, 30 or 12 capsules), BioPlus capsules (7 strains, 60 capsules), Urobiotic Max (probiotic blend plus D-mannose and cranberry, 14 sachets).

Formulas without live bacteria

Fibers is a pure prebiotic, inulin from chicory root, in 15 sachets. Sevida is a formula with beta-glucan Betox-93, arabinogalactan ResistAid, zinc, and selenium, with no bacteria. HelicoProtect is based on Pylopass, a selection of non-viable cells of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17648, meaning it is also not a probiotic in the strict sense.

Forms of administration and who they are for

• Capsules:Opti6, BioPlus, Enteric Ecol, Probiotic, HelicoProtect, Sevida. Taken after meals, with liquid. Some of them use acid-resistant DRcaps capsules.
• Sachets:Kids, Fibers, Urobiotic Forte, Urobiotic Max. Dissolved in water or juice. The form of choice for children and people who do not swallow capsules.
• Lozenges:BioPlus tablets. Taken after meals and remain in contact with the oral mucosa.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best probiotic

There is no single universal "best." Probiotics differ by strain, number of live bacteria, form, and purpose, and the right one depends on age, need, and regimen. Instead of a ranking, compare labels based on these four criteria.

What types of probiotics are there

By genus: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, plus the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii. By form: capsule, sachet, lozenge. By composition: probiotic only, synbiotic with prebiotic, or a combination with plant ingredients and vitamins.

How to read a probiotic label

Look for three things: the number of strains, the number of live bacteria in CFU, and the alphanumeric code of the strain. A strain without a code, for example, just two words of a Latin name, is not an identified strain. An example of an identified one: L. bulgaricus LKZ-200.

How many CFU are enough

In the portfolio, the range is from 2 billion per capsule to 20 billion. A larger number means greater density, but it does not automatically make the formula more suitable. It is more important whether it is stated at what point in time it was measured.

Does the Bulgarian origin of the strains matter

The argument is operational: the strains are selected, researched, and produced in the same environment, in the company's own laboratory since 1992. There is no evidence that geographical origin in itself determines the effect.

What a food supplement manufacturer should not promise

A food supplement does not treat, does not prevent, and does not alleviate disease. This is not a precaution, but a requirement of Regulation 1924/2006 and Art. 7, paragraph 3 of Regulation 1169/2011. A formulation that promises a cure is a cause for suspicion regarding the entire label.
